50MW Lost due To Unexpected Tripping

Kota Kinabalu - On 20th Oct 2009 at 6.12 pm, Teluk Salut (Independent Power Producers) IPP Power Station in Kayu Madang, Menggatal had encounter technical problem which causes one of its 32 MW Gas Turbine high speed protection sensor to trip. The total generation capacity reduction because of this tripping was 50 MW. It is estimated nearly 90,000 customers was affected due to this unforeseen tripping to the power station. As a result the already tight reserve margin in the grid was further reduced to negative and enforced SESB to exercise load shedding to the customer throughout Sabah to stabilize the system. The load shedding was carried out in areas throughout Sabah especially in Kota Belud, Tuaran, Sepanggar Bay, Inanam, Kota Kinabalu, Sandakan, Tawau, Beaufort, W.P.Labuan and Penampang. The load shedding exercise to the affected customers were gradually restored after the peak load demand and the last affected area was restored back at 8 29 pm. The IPP Teluk Salut Power Station was eventually able to restart the set at 12 pm midnight and the power station was declared back to normal operation at 1.54 am on 21st Oct 2009. SESB apologized for the inconvenience caused to the affected customers.
